and Shark kulliyyat al-Qanuin), all of which are among Ibn al-Quff's medical works which so far have remained unedited. Other plates represent medieval items and modem examples of art and architecture (ceramics, al-7ahiriyya Library, mosques, al-Madrasa al-'Adiliyya, Baptist Mission Hospital in CAjljfn, Citadel of al-Karak, etc.). Along the lines of his publication on al-Biriuni (see above) Hamarneh gives appendices of authors cited in his book. Many of these names appear (with almost the same accounts) in his two publications, as for example: 'All Sarabiyuin author of the Kunnash is placed in the ninth century (Hamarneh, Thn al-Quff, p. 178), and the tenth century (Hamarneh, al-Btruin!, vol. 2, p. 131). Interesting information is revealed by Hamarneh on Ibn al-Quff who seems to have been familiar with one of Ibn al-Nafis's books: a commentary on Hippocrates'Aphorisms. Hamarneh ends with his lecture in Arabic which was read before an International Conference on the History of Bildd al-Sham, held in Amman (20-25 April 1974), and is supplemented with an "Arabic select bibliography" (pp. 21-27). FRANCISCO JOSE AYALA and THEODORIUS DOBZHANSKY (editors), Studies in the philosophy of biology. Reduction and related problems, In order to discuss some of the fundamental issues which concern biology and its relationships with other natural sciences a group of distinguished scientists and philosophers met at Bellagio in September 1972. This book contains the pre-circulated papers presented, and some of the discussion they generated. In addition to the well-who provided a formidable forum of talent. It is impossible to summarize the individual contributions, but each was important, so that the book will be of great value to philosophers of science, historians of biology and of medicine, and to some biologists. The main theme was the many problems relating to reductionism, which are currently of much interest, for there is the reductionist approach characterized by modem molecular biology, and the anti-reductionist who denies its value. Thus a central part of the debate concerned the strategy of future research: should it be pitched at a molecular or at an organismic level, or are both necessary? It seemed to be generally agreed that the study of biological problems at a given level of complexity must include consideration of higher and lower levels of organization. But it is unlikely that the majority of experimental biologists will bother about these philosophical niceties. The topic is by no means a new one for a seminar. The participants …

Contemporary Debates in the Philosophy of Biology : A Historical Review
The philosophy of biology has existed as a distinct sub-discipline within the philosophy of science for about thirty years. The rapid growth of the field has mirrored that of the biological sciences in the same period. Today the discipline is well represented in the leading journals in philosophy of science, as well as in several specialist journals. There have been two generations of textbooks...
متن کاملدر آمدی بر فلسفۀ زیست شناسی
The growth of philosophical interest in biology over the past thirty years reflects the increasing prominence of the biological sciences in the same period. There is now an extensive literature on many different biological topics, and it would be impossible to summarise this body of work in this single entry. Instead, this entry sets out to explain what philosophy of biology is. Why does biolog...
متن کاملCadmium chloride treatment of rats significantly impairs membrane integrity of mesenchymal stem cells via electrolyte imbalance and lipid peroxidation, a possible explanation of Cd related osteoporosis
Objective(s): Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play an important role in bone health. Cadmium causes osteoporosis, but the exact mechanisms of its effect on MSCs are not known. Materials and Methods: Rats were treated with cadmium chloride (40 mg/l) in drinking water for six weeks, and then the biochemical and morphological studies on MSCs were carried out as a cellular backup for oste...

Skeletal muscle injuries are one of the most common problems in the worldwide which impose a substantial financial burden to the health care system. Accordingly, it widely accepted that muscle regeneration is a promising approach that can be used to treat muscle injury patients. However, the underlying mechanisms of muscle regeneration have yet to be elucidated. The muscle structure and muscle...
متن کاملPharmacogenetic variation of SLC47A1 gene and metformin response in type2 diabetes patients
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a worldwide epidemic disorder with considerable health and economic consequences. Metformin is one of the most commonly prescribed oral antidiabetic drugs. Pharmacogenetic studies showed that variants in genes related to the pharmacokinetics of metformin were associated with glucose-lowering effect of metformin. The aim of this study was to evaluate pharmacogenetic v...

Medicalization, in the sense of expansion of medicine in different aspects of human life and ultimately the transformation of medicine into a tool of social control and domination, is a common interpenetration in the literature. This concept, since its inception in the mid-twentieth century, has been an exclusive critique of modern medicine, meaning that branch of medicine based on biomedical p...
